Cisplatin plus Gemcitabine for Biliary Tract Cancer

To the Editor: Biliary tract cancers are associated with a poor prognosis and are frequently diagnosed in advanced stages. Valle et al. (April 8 issue)1 report on the treatment of advanced biliary tract cancer and on the good results of the Advanced Biliary Cancer (ABC)-02 trial (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00262769) of gemcitabine plus cisplatin.Patients with biliary tract cancer must be stratified according to whether they have cholangiocarcinomas, periampullary carcinoma, or gallbladder cancers. Moreover, gallbladder cancers must be divided into two categories: squamous-cell and non−squamous-cell carcinomas.2 In fact, these tumors have a different biologic behavior and are associated with different factors . . .
