To the Editor: In regard to the article by Dr. Barry (March 28 issue),1 a survey conducted by the Japanese tobacco industry in 1990 found that the prevalence of smoking was 60.5 percent among men and 14.3 percent among women; in other words, about 26.5 million men and 6.7 million women smoke in Japan. From April to September 1990, 162.8 billion cigarettes were sold in Japan, 3.5 billion more than were sold during the same period in 1989.
