Through the fusion of genetics with bio-chemistry and through the development of ingenious techniques for exploring the range of dimensions that were formerly hidden between microscopy and chemistry, we have acquired a remarkably coherent picture of the universal features of cell structure and function. Moreover, Darwin's theory can now be considered Darwin's law: We understand how the required genetic variation arises, we understand why information cannot flow back from phenotype to genotype, and we can measure evolutionary distance directly in terms of DNA sequences.
