Diagnosis of Subclinical MyocarditisThe frequency with which pathological evidence of myocarditis is found in patients who have died of infectious disease without clinical evidence for cardiac involvement2 and the high incidence of abnormal electrocardiograms as the only cardiovascular abnormality suggest that, in the majority of cases, acute myocarditis is not accompanied by grossly abnormal cardiac function. At present it is uncertain if any useful purpose is served by establishing a diagnosis of subclinical myocarditis.4 Acute myocarditis usually reaches the stage of maximal cardiac involvement early in its course.
