CURRENTLY, there is considerable concern about the problem of providing medical care for the general population in underdeveloped countries and for the sparsely populated areas of countries more advanced in development.‡ On a recent trip through the South Pacific I had an opportunity to observe a system of medical education that, for the past eighty years, has helped provide a solution for this problem in the area that it serves and might provide a solution to the same problem in other countries.
