New Antiepileptic Drugs

In the past two years, three new antiepileptic drugs — gabapentin, lamotrigine, and felbamate — have been approved for use in the United States. They are the first such drugs to be approved since valproic acid, in 1978. These three drugs and others now in use in Europe, Canada, or Japan or being tested in trials in the United States reflect the resurgence of interest in developing new drugs for the treatment of epilepsy.
