Following initial publication at NEJM.org, NEJM is pleased to grant authors the right to reuse the published version of their article as follows:
- Share a copy with colleagues for their educational use
- Include portions, such as figures and tables, in book chapters or other educational articles you write
- Include a copy, or portions of your article, in your thesis or dissertation
- Include a copy in a collection of your educational writing
- Provide copies to students in classes that you teach that have no commercial ties (i.e., those sponsored by academic institutions or scientific societies)
- Deposit your research article for display at your academic institution's online repository six (6) months after initial publication
Republication of NEJM should be accompanied by a reference to the initial publication in NEJM and a link back to the original article at NEJM.org to provide readers with access to any corrections, related correspondence, or web features.
The credit line should read as follows: “From [Publication Title, Author(s), Title of Article, Volume No., Page No. Copyright © (notice year) Massachusetts Medical Society. Reprinted with permission.

Depositing Peer Reviewed Research Articles to Public Repositories
If your research article arose from research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health or the Wellcome Trust, we will submit on your behalf a PDF of the published version of your article to PubMed Central or Europe PubMed Central to be released six months after the article is published.
If your research article arose from research funded by another not-for-profit organization that requires authors to submit to a publicly available, not-for-profit repository (such as the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central), you have NEJM’s permission to submit a PDF of the published version of your article (as supplied by NEJM) on the following conditions:
- You request, and the not-for-profit repository agrees, that public release of the PDF will not occur until six (6) months after your article is published.
- To avoid confusion in the literature that might arise from multiple versions of the same article, you agree not to submit any version of your article, except the PDF from NEJM, to any publicly available repository.
