About NEJMFrequently Asked Questions

THE NEW NEJM.ORG

Why was NEJM.org redesigned?
The new NEJM.org was designed to make it easier and faster for you to find and use the NEJM content you rely on to deliver the best patient care. The way you practice medicine today shapes your information needs. Making more decisions in less time means you need a fast and reliable source of trusted information. The enhanced design and navigation of the new NEJM.org gives you easy access to the latest medical research, plus commentary on the clinical applications of that research.

What has changed in the new NEJM.org?
The new NEJM.org has a suite of features that enable clinicians like you to interact with the material. You can personalize the presentation of the data to your own needs and interests, saving you time to spend on patient care. Some of the exciting new benefits now available include:

Enhanced design and navigation. Find the content you want more easily. Enhanced design and navigation will allow you to instantly locate the information you’re looking for.

My NEJM, your personalized space at NEJM. My NEJM gives you quick and easy access to your personal profile information and preferences.

New specialty pages. These new pages let you focus quickly on the content that is most important to you. On each of these 19 Specialty Pages, you’ll find articles pertaining to that specialty or topic, and can choose to receive free e-mail alerts that will notify you about new articles in any of the 19 specialties, so you never miss relevant content.

New search tools. New filters and sorting options let you refine your search results to find content more accurately and quickly.

The NEJM Archive – articles back to 1812. Every article NEJM has published will be available on the new NEJM.org. You’ll be able to search the Archive by specialty, topic and/or article type. Subscribers get 50 free access tokens to view Archive articles published between 1812 and 1989. Each token provides access to an article for 24 hours. Nonsubscribers can purchase Archive articles on a pay-per-view basis.

Intuitive article format. A convenient new tabbed article format facilitates more efficient, intuitive scanning, helping you find what you need faster.

What hasn’t changed is the quality of the leading-edge NEJM content you have come to expect.

Will my username and password remain the same?
The new NEJM.org requires you to use your e-mail address to sign in. If you currently use your e-mail address as your username, nothing will change for you, but you will be asked to confirm your account the first time you sign in.

If your current NEJM.org username is not your e-mail address, you will be asked to change your username to your e-mail address the first time you sign in.

Either way, account confirmation is a very simple process that will allow you to confirm your information and create your My NEJM account.

In addition, we have prepared this new, expanded set of FAQs, easy-to-use links to send us feedback on the new design, and an introductory web tour and video. You may also access the Help Index for further support.

We welcome your thoughts and feedback on the redesign of the site — e-mail your comments and suggestions. You may also use the “Comments + Questions?” button located at the bottom of each page.

Has the search function changed?
Yes. You can now search the entire NEJM Archive going back to 1812. Additional filters are available in the search tool to help you narrow your results by medical specialty/topic, article category, and date. Results can be sorted by Most Recent, Most Viewed, or Most Cited. ACCESS AND SIGN-IN

Customer Service is available Monday through Friday, 8am – 4pm ET in the U.S. Contact us by e-mail  or by telephone at 800-THE-NEJM (800-843-6356) in the U.S. & Canada, or 781-893-3800 x5515 outside the U.S. & Canada. For Customer Service Europe contact EMD Berlin by e-mail or by telephone at 49 (30) 333099810 Monday through Thursday, 8 am – 5 pm CET and on Fridays 8am – 4pm CET.

Why isn’t my username recognized when I try to sign in to the new site?
One of the changes on the new NEJM.org site is that your e-mail address will replace your current username for sign-in. The  first time you sign in to the new NEJM.org, you will be asked to change your username to your e-mail address. Once you have done that you will sign in with your e-mail address going forward. Your old username will no longer work. If you continue to experience problems, please contact Customer Service.

Why is my username/password combination that used to work not working now?
The new site requires a unique e-mail address for each account. If you had multiple accounts on the site using the same e-mail address, your accounts may have been merged into a single account. You may log into the site using your e-mail address as your username. During the account merge, your most active account became your primary account. It is that primary account's password that will now work during sign-in. If you do not remember your password, or if the password you enter does not work, please use the Forgot Password? function to reset it. Once you log in and confirm your account, click on the Account tab in My NEJM to verify your profile data. If you continue to experience problems, please contact Customer Service.

I have forgotten my password—how can I retrieve it?

From any NEJM.org page, click on the “sign in” link in the upper right corner of your screen. Then click on the “forgot password?” link in the sign-in box that appears. An e-mail will be sent to the e-mail address associated with your account with instructions for resetting your password. Your password should be 6 to 20 characters long.

I can't remember my username or e-mail address.
Please contact Customer Service.  We will be happy to help you retrieve your account information.

What does the “Remember me” check box do?
If you check this box you will be automatically signed in to NEJM.org the next time you visit. Your browser must be set to accept cookies in order to use this option. If you use a shared computer, the Remember me function is not recommended.

SEARCH HELP

For more detailed information on search functions, please go to our Search Help page.

Has the search function changed?
Yes. You can now search the entire NEJM Archive going back to 1812. Additional filters are available in the search tool to help you narrow your results by medical specialty/topic, article category, and date. Results can be sorted by Most Recent, Most Viewed, or Most Cited. Advanced Search includes the ability to search within Full Text, Titles, or Abstracts/Extracts, as well as Boolean searches (ALL, ANY, NOT). You can search by author as well.  Additional functions have been added to make it easier to find video and other interactive content.

How do I search for videos and other interactive content?
In addition to the Browse pages for multimedia and interactive content, there is a toggle in the search tool that shows your results in Figures and Multimedia. Filters appear on the left, allowing you to narrow your results by medical specialty, media type, and publication date. Each result indicates what type(s) of media that result contains (e.g., audio, video, interactive).

What’s the difference between the search box in the header on each page, and the search box within search results or on a Browse page?

The search box in the header on every page is a basic search box. It will generate a set of results based on the terms you entered, with all the default settings returned (All specialties, All categories, past 10 years). The search box within the results set, or on a Browse page, keeps the filters you’ve already applied to your results and executes a search on a new term with those same settings intact.

Can I save my searches on NEJM.org?

Yes, you can save searches (and articles) on NEJM.org when you create your My NEJM account. Just click on the “save” link at the top of your results. You can then view and edit searches in the Saved section of My NEJM.

Where can I find Medline search?
Medline search is no longer supported through the NEJM.org site. Access Medline here.

NEJM WEEKLY CME PROGRAM

Do I need to answer correctly to get credit?
Yes. As of May 23, 2011, you must receive a score of 100% to receive AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM.   Once you have successfully completed the exam, you can claim credit for the exam.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Why was this change put in place?
AMA PRA credit system modifications for 2010 require that journal-based CME activities include an assessment of the learner's performance; credit may be awarded only to those that meet a minimum performance level.

Why can’t I see the answers to CME exams I submitted prior to July 2010?
We were not able to migrate individual responses to CME exams submitted prior to the launch of the new NEJM.org site. However, the record of your taking the exam and the credit and certificate you received are all still available through your My NEJM account. We apologize for any inconvenience.

What happened to my remaining free exams from the old site?

When you log in to your My NEJM account, you will see that your free exams have been reset to 20 exams, regardless of how many you had already taken through the old site.

How can I use the free exams part of my paid subscription?
The free exams granted as part of your subscription are automatically made available to you before any exams you may have also purchased. Exams that you purchase never expire. You will be asked to confirm that you want to use an exam credit before being directed to the exam.

What happens to unused free exams when my subscription expires?
Your free exams expire with your subscription. When you renew, you will receive a new set of free exams. Any exams remaining at expiration are not carried over to your account upon renewal.

Where can I view a list of available exams?
Browse the list of more than 300 online exams across a wide variety of medical topics, with three new exams in each issue.

Where can I view my transcript and certificates?

From My NEJM, click on “View All CME Activity.” You will see a link to your transcripts and certificates there. You can also print your entire transcript or your transcript from a particular year.

What is the CME program accreditation source?

The Massachusetts Medical Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

FOR AUTHORS

Visit our Author Center for detailed information for authors.

Who is on the Journal’s Editorial Board?

View the current list of the Journal’s Editorial Board members.

What is the Journal’s impact factor?
The Journal’s most recent (2010) impact factor is 53.48. Impact factor is a measure of the number of times papers published in the previous two years have been cited in the scientific literature. Impact factors for all major journals are calculated by the Institute for Scientific Information.

What is the embargo?

The embargo is an agreement between the Journal and the media. The media agree to wait until Wednesday at 5pm ET in the U.S. before reporting stories based on articles appearing in that Thursday’s issue of the Journal.

Authors are expected to refrain from discussing their research with reporters prior to the Friday before publication.

The only exception is if an author presents research at a medical meeting. Responding to media inquiries at the meeting, or during the week following the meeting, will not jeopardize publication.  We ask that authors follow these guidelines:

Please do not discuss the fact that the research has been submitted to or accepted for publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Please do not distribute any copies of the manuscript, tables, or figures. (It is acceptable to use the materials in a presentation, but they should not be distributed.)
