Article

It was brought to our attention that Figure 1Figure 1Originally printed as Figure 1 in Grody et al., Infection of the heart by the human immunodeficiency virus. Am J Cardiol 1990;66:203-6. Reprinted with the permission of the publisher. in a 1990 article by Grody and coworkers,1 when printed as displayed below (in black and white, inverted top to bottom and side to side), is strikingly similar (except for the in situ hybridization signal) to Figure 2Figure 2Originally printed as Figure 2 in Barbaro et al., Incidence of dilated cardiomyopathy and detection of HIV in myocardial cells of HIV-positive patients. N Engl J Med 1998;339:1093-9. below, which appeared in an article by Barbaro et al. that we published in 1998.2 We contacted the corresponding authors of both articles. An author of the article by Grody et al. provided us with their original microscope slide, which we photographed (Figure 3Figure 3Photomicrograph of an original microscope slide provided by one of the authors of Grody et al., Infection of the heart by the human immunodeficiency virus. below). Because of the unmistakable similarity between the figures (the cellular aspects of Figure 1 and Figure 2 are fully superimposable in transparencies), we must retract publication of the article by Barbaro et al.
