Figure 1 A 37-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of hoarseness and progressive difficulty in walking. The patient's face had the characteristic beak-like appearance of Werner's syndrome (left panel). Examination disclosed juvenile cataracts, scleroderma-like skin changes, hair loss, deficiency of adipose tissue, and sensory neuropathy of the lower limbs (right panel). He also had severe arteriosclerosis of the coronary arteries (as identified by coronary arteriography) and the legs.
