Renal Vascular Disease
Edited by A.C. Novick, with J. Scoble and G. Hamilton. 539 pp., illustrated. Philadelphia, W.B. Saunders, 1996. $75. ISBN: 0-7020-1814-7This comprehensive review of renal vascular hypertension in children and adults deals with the various disorders whose final common pathway is renal vascular hypertension. Of particular interest is the account of the pathology and pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, fibrodysplasia, and Takayasu's arteritis. The latest diagnostic and imaging methods are detailed, with a firm description of the physiology that justifies their use. The book gives a thoughtful account of the pros and cons of screening and practical recommendations for the clinician.
The section on atherosclerotic ischemic renal disease emphasizes the risk of end-stage renal disease. This subject is important, but it all too often receives scant clinical attention.
Various medical and surgical treatments to reduce or correct hypertension and preserve renal function are outlined. This book complements another (Andrew C. Novick and Ralph A. Straffon, eds. Vascular Problems in Urologic Surgery. Philadelphia: W.B. Saunders, 1982), and both should serve the clinician quite well in dealing with renal vascular problems.
