Figure 1 Malignant Melanoma.

There are several recognized variants of malignant melanoma. Panel A depicts a superficial spreading melanoma of the trunk, the type most commonly seen in fair-skinned patients. Panel B shows a lentigo maligna melanoma of the cheek, a type seen most frequently on sun-exposed areas in elderly patients. Panel C shows a nodular melanoma of the helix. The black streak in Panel D is a subungual melanoma of the thumb, a subtype of acral-lentiginous melanoma seen most frequently in Asians and blacks. Panel E shows an amelanotic melanoma on the arm.
