Figure 1 Coccidioides immitis.
A specimen of bronchoalveolar-lavage fluid was obtained from a 33-year-old patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who had been admitted to the hospital with anorexia, weakness, dyspnea, cough, and fever. A chest film showed bilateral pulmonary infiltrates. The specimen was stained with Calcofluor white and photographed with a fluorescence microscope (x200). An intact spherule of Coccidioides immitis can be seen in the upper right portion of the image, and a ruptured spherule surrounded by released endospores in the left portion.
