We support strongly the recommendation of Plotkin, et al for a Global Vaccine Development Fund, but want to mention that cholera should be included on the list of "vaccine preventable diseases." A global stockpile of oral cholera vaccine is now available, and the vaccine is being used to help control and prevent outbreaks in several African and Asian countries (South Sudan, Tanzania, Malawi, Bangladesh, Nepal), and its expanding use is being supported by GAVI. This new vaccine is becoming an important new tool in the integrated strategy to control and eventually contain cholera as was shown in the recent report from Qadri in urban Bangladesh..
